Improved Apparatus for Electropolishing

The cleaning of welds on objects made from stainless steel can often take longer than the welding process itself, and if not performed properly, will result in discolouration and staining of the finished product. But traditional weld cleaning techniques are inefficient and use hazardous chemicals and unwieldy processes.

Metal Science Technologies has developed a portable electro polishing system, the mepBLITz and TIG CHAMP BRUSH DC PLUS,The mepBLITz  combines an electrolyte pump and cooling system to deliver faster and better-quality weld cleaning. Cooling the electrode enables more current to be used at reduced heat, meaning that the electrolyte can be used more efficiently for faster cleaning. Both machines use a customised waveform in the DC current that serves to shake atoms loose, enabling the tip to electropolish more efficiently.

The mepBLITz and TIG CHAMP BRUSH DC  are much faster than the best available post-weld finishing electrochemical machines, and improve the final quality and consistency of the finish and its resistance to corrosion

It is also safer than competing techniques. Use of the electro polishing technique eliminates the need for pickling paste, a hazardous material containing hydrofluoric acid that is banned in many workplaces. And because polishing can be done on site, fabricators no longer need to send items off site to electro polishing immersion baths.

The cleaning electrode can be made to many sizes  enabling polishing in areas that have been otherwise inaccessible, including internals of pipes and tubes. The devices are also suitable for thicker gauge material and MIG welds, meaning that fabricators can make greater use of lower-cost MIG welding.
