SoftMan and MaxMan: digital image rendering and animation
Visual effects house Animal Logic has developed SoftMan and MaxMan - ground-breaking plug-ins which facilitate the creation of digital content for the computer generated imagery (CGI) industry by linking RenderMan (the leading CGI rendering program) with the two leading CGI animation programs.
Rendering is the computation of various image parameters, while animation is the generation of new images. Before the development of SoftMan and MaxMan, each function had to be performed separately. Linking rendering with animation has two major benefits: significant savings in production time and costs, and expanded capabilities for digital artists to explore.
MaxMan links RenderMan with 3D Studio MAX, and supports BMRT and Prman for NT and Unix.
SoftMan links RenderMan with SoftImage, and supports an extremely comprehensive range of features for both programs. It also allows the use of Pixar's Prman or Larry Gritz's BMRT from within SoftImage. Models, animation and textures are all converted automatically, and RenderMan shaders are easily applied.
Both SoftMan and MaxMan are on the market. The software has proven robust, stable and capable of meeting all production requirements.
