3D Patient Education Program

Healthcare professionals and their patients will both benefit from innovative patient-education software designed by Sydney company Anatomate.

Managing Director Dr John Hart said he believed the software was the first of its kind in the world, and would provide a much-needed boost to the healthcare industry.

“It saves the surgeons a significant amount of time in educating patients about the procedure and, in turn, ensures the patients are thoroughly informed,” he said.

After five years of intensive research and development, the company’s flagship product – ‘Lumbar Spine: Diseases and Treatments’ – was released this year and has already attracted hundreds of orders from around Australia and the US.

The software allows surgeons to show their patients animated anatomy, pathology, physiotherapy, surgery, rehabilitation and complications – in a movie format.

The product is designed for lumbar spine surgeons, radiologists and pain-management specialists.

Dr Hart said the library of 3D animations allowed doctors to construct their own sequences or to use those already provided – effectively tailor-making the educational package for each individual patient.

“The program also allows digital patient printouts to be edited during the consultation, printed for the patient, and saved to hard disc under the patient's name,” said Dr Hart.

He said patients found the state-of-the-art animations easy to understand, and therefore did not need the doctor to be present while they received the education specific to their needs.

“It also provides an informed consent audit trail – at any time in the future, the exact educational movie sequence the patient viewed, the tailor-made printouts they were given and the specific comprehension questionnaire they completed, can be reproduced,” said Dr Hart.

“The program will revolutionise the patient-education and informed-consent process around the world.”

Anatomate also plans to launch other products, including ‘Cervical Spine: Diseases and Treatment’, early next year. A complete orthopaedic and neurosurgery library of products will be released during the next couple of years.
