Engine Control Units (ECUs) have become an essential component within the performance vehicle industry for racing and custom cars. Adaptronics e420c ECU is the most flexible device available and uses cost-effective hardware to allow the technology to be retargeted to different vehicles as required. While most ECUs provide extensive control over the engine’s various actuators and inputs, the equations that govern how these variables are controlled are generally fixed. However Adaptronic’s second ECU, the e1280s, provides unprecedented flexibility by allowing users to define their own equations, using a patented unique scripting system to describe and enable customisation of the control algorithms themselves. Previously this level of customisation would have only been available to someone designing their own ECU.
This makes it possible to instigate engine control regimes that are significantly different from those envisioned at the engine’s manufacture, such as when experimenting with alternative fuel types. Should the tuning parameters of the engine change the ECU can be reprogrammed accordingly. This flexibility also makes the Adaptronic ECUs suitable for specialist situations that cannot be catered to with other third-party ECUs.
The result is that engine performance is improved, making the vehicle more responsive and pleasant to drive, while emissions are reduced. By providing complete visibility of the internal algorithms the e1280s can also be used as a teaching tool for instructing engine builders and mechanics.
