Cape Marine Australia

Swing Mooring Pontoon
Vessel moorings around the coast of Australia have become a rare commodity – with some waiting times for moorings in popular recreational boating areas estimated to be more than 15 years.

Cape Marine Australia has come up with a simple and innovative way to address this problem. The Swing Mooring Pontoon is a unique mooring device that can accommodate two vessels. It is designed to swing in concert with the surrounding moored vessels on conventional swing moorings found commonly in most Australian waterways.

Cape Marine’s Director Greg Hill said the pontoons had attracted a positive response from the marine industry worldwide. In 2005 it won the Australian Marine Industries Federation’s Australian Marine Award for New and Innovative Product and was recently honoured with a Special Mention at the DAME (marine design) Awards in Amsterdam, at the worlds biggest Marine Equipment Trade Show.

Mr Hill said the pontoons were a practical solution to the growing waiting lists for moorings in many popular recreational boating areas around the world because they allowed two vessels to be moored in the same area normally required by one vessel, potentially doubling the capacity of mooring areas in rivers, lakes and harbours.

“The pontoons are easily installed and they can be employed to reduce the area occupied by moorings in crowded bays to create a greater, safer area for navigation between moored vessels or to reduce the damage to sensitive marine habitat like sea grass beds caused by vessel moorings,” he said.

The size and scale of the pontoons can vary to accommodate vessels of different length and beam, or they can be joined in various configurations to provide temporary marinas for yacht races, fishing contests or other aquatic events.
