Roofsafe T Systems

Bi-Directional Safety Harness
Increased workplace health and safety regulations and insurance requirements have brought unprecedented pressure on workers to take steps to protect themselves from harm.

The truck industry is no exception, but it has been difficult to address some of the safety concerns with ease.

An example of this is curtain sided (tautliner) trucks, which pose significant safety risks for drivers unloading and loading.
Because the sides of the vehicle are open and it has a fixed roof, it has been difficult to use an effective safety harness system that allows free movement.

Overhead safety lines that are used in addressing this risk for flat bed or open trucks cannot be used for the tautliner trucks due to the roof.

Leading Australian safety harness designer and manufacturer Roofsafe T Systems has come up with a simple yet innovative answer to the problem.

Its Safetruck system can be installed as a permanent or removable solution. The company’s managing director Michael Bermejo said it was a user-friendly and cost-effective device that would suit most, if not all curtain-sided trucks.

“The transport industry is noted worldwide for the high level of accidents experienced by drivers falling off trucks and on top of loads, and there are known cases where such falls have resulted in fatalities,” he said.

“Curtain-sided trucks represent a considerable number of the transport vehicles in Australia, as well as overseas, so it is important we address their safety issues.

“This reflects a solution to what has been an industry-wide problem.”

The system uses a specially designed rail system that is attached to the roof extrusion of the truck. The design allows a simultaneous bilateral movement which directly corresponds to the location of the person using the system and the direction in which they are moving. A self-retracting lifeline is positioned at all times above the person’s head to ensure the highest level of safety.

“It does not interfere with the loading and unloading process and can arrest a fall in less then 50cm – and is very cost effective both as a temporary or permanent safety system solution,” said Mr Bermejo.
