Traffic Innovations

The iStud Vehicle Detector

Accurate and detailed knowledge of traffic flow plays an important role in managing road networks, and can help to reduce congestion, improve safety and extend the life of the road surface. Most existing solutions however use embedded inductive loops that provide only limited information regarding whether a vehicle is present or not.

The iStud Vehicle Detector from Traffic Innovations uses a three-axis magnetic sensor to create a very detailed picture of road usage by detecting the presence of vehicles travelling above as well as their speed and vehicle type. This information can be both monitored centrally and used locally to adjust nearby traffic light cycles to improve traffic flow.

The iStud has numerous advantages over competing technologies. It is not impacted by light levels or weather conditions. Unlike inductive loop-based systems, which require up to 11 cuts to the road surface when deployed, the iStud requires only one cut for installation in existing roads, and none when laid beneath new roads. This means that the iStud causes significantly less damage to the road surface, and it is not disturbed should the road surface be re-sheeted.

The iStud can be used to determine the presence of vehicles at a traffic signal, or can be deployed ahead of the traffic signal to provide real time data regarding approaching traffic volumes. It can also be incorporated into pedestrian warning systems.

Traffic Innovations has formed alliances with numerous traffic light manufacturers which will see the iStud incorporated into traffic light control systems and intelligence transport system infrastructure.
