HypoMon® - A safer night's sleep
Hypoglycaemia is a fact of life for sufferers of Type 1 diabetes, and occurs when blood sugar levels drop to low levels. Its impact can leave a sufferer feeling exhausted, and in extreme situations leave them with impaired functions or render them unconscious. More than half of all severe hypos incidents occur at night, when people with Type 1 diabetes are unable to easily monitor for hypoglycaemia.
The HypoMon from AIMEDICS provides a simple solution to monitoring sleep-time hypoglycaemia. It is a system that has a belt, sensor and transmitter that is worn around the user’s chest at night, and is connected wirelessly to a monitor. Should the HypoMon detect symptoms that a hypo is imminent it sounds an alarm to alert the carer to intervene. Patients are able to sleep soundly, knowing that they will be woken should the HypoMon detect that a hypo is likely.
The HypoMon is more convenient than other alternatives, such as constantly waking the sufferer to manually test their blood sugar level. Another alternative is to use a continuous glucose monitor, but these use an invasive sensor that remains active for days at a time and often provide false positives alarms, and require significant training on the part of the person with Type 1 diabetes and carer.
The HypoMon is approved for people with Type I diabetes aged between 10 and 25, with trials taking place to determine its efficacy for other groups. The potential market for the HypoMon is large, as there are more than 25,000 sufferers of Type 1 diabetes in Australia today in this age bracket, and more than 350,000 in the US.
