Cylo Technology
3D Computer Mouse
The modest computer mouse has come a long way since it was launched to the world by inventor Dr Douglas Engelbart in the 1960s. What was once a wooden case with metal wheels has become a high tech tool we cannot live without. Today they come in many varieties, from the basic to the wireless.
Sydney-based company Cylo Technology is about to take the mouse plague to even greater proportions with an innovative take on the wireless mouse that allows true three-dimensional (3D) control.
Inventor and Cylo managing director Laurence Crew unveiled his Cylo 3style mouse at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2007. He was at the show as part of the ‘Technology Australia’ 2007 Pavilion, sponsored by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) and the Australian Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Association (AEEMA).
The 3style mouse – a world first – created a small sensation amongst show visitors and fellow exhibitors. The 3style is a user-friendly take on the wireless mouse, allowing true 3D control, a major advantage in the rapidly growing 3D design, imaging, video, audio, gaming and simulation markets. Mr Crew said he was keen to make sure the technology was available to everyone. “Imagine being able to simply spin your mouse to scroll down large documents or to rotate 3D objects across all axes simultaneously without needing to know tricky commands – this mouse allows the user extra functionality,” he said. “The world-market for individually sold mice is currently worth US$2 billion a year and up until now is dominated by 2D devices.”
Accolades for the invention have come far and wide, and Mr Crew is currently in talks with potential licensees and distributors. Depending on the outcome of these negotiations, he expects the mouse could be available by early next year.
