CalAir Pipe Systems: high pressure coloured pipes
"Application-specific" pipes with high pressure capability and coloured for content identification, have been designed by Australian company CalAir Pipe Systems and are now being produced utilizing new polymer and process technology.
CalAir developed the advanced system utilizing new polymer and process technology that is easy to install, will not corrode and is 8-times lighter than steel. Pipe lengths are coupled using compression joints with patented bayonet mechanisms which avoid the need for threading, welding, fusing or gluing. A tamper-proof locking ring prevents unauthorised removal.
A Fire Retardant Anti Static (FRAS) pipe has been produced by CalAir for use in the mining industry to eliminate heavy steel pipes known to be a major cause of contamination in expensive compressed air equipment. The system has a maximum working pressure of 322 psi, three times normal working pressure, without weakening or deforming.
The pipe systems are made from UV-stable polymer materials such as Random co-polymer and Block co-polymer polypropylene compounds, with the pipes formed in a radically-designed extrusion die head. The polymer compounds are non-toxic, reusable and recyclable, unlike PVC and other thermoplastics. The CalAir systems are also more cost effective than comparable products, they will not leak at the joints, they can be installed by one person in most cases and offer greater safety than other systems. A 50-year life expectancy adds to their appeal.
Mining and manufacturing industries using compressed air equipment are currently the most important markets for this technology. Other applications include Chilled Water and Hot Water systems, Potable Water, all Inert Gasses, Fire Sprinkler Systems and most chemical transfer lines. CalAir compressed air products are already being exported to South East Asia, New Zealand and the US, and interest has been shown by companies in Europe and South America
